Rotimi Fani-Kayode: 1955-1989, born in Nigeria, worked in Great Britain
In this series, Fani-Kayode portrays Black men wearing floral headdresses and religious fetish clothing, posing in the light against dark backgrounds.
The series links sexuality with spirituality and explores the relationship “between erotic fantasy and traditional spiritual values”.
Sabelo Mlangeni: *1980, born and working in South Africa.
Country Girls was shot in small towns in the South African province of Mpumalanga and is an intimate portrait of queer communities in rural areas. The images show local hairdressers, drag queens and beauty pageant participants at family gatherings and social events. Although the South African Constitution of 1996 promises equality, these encounters take place in a climate of continued violence and discrimination.
